Italian Black Anise
My Nana used to make a hard round Italian pretzel or bagel like treat with black anise. They are called Tadales. I remember she would only use black anise seeds in them.

She was Calabrese and had family who would keep her well supplied.

She used to tell us that the black anise seeds grow wild in the mountains of Calabria and that as far as she knew, this is the only area of Italy where they grow and in order to obtain these precious seeds, you need to have family that is familiar with the areas they grow and are willing to commit the time to pick these tiny seeds.

They are wonderfully spicy but sweet at the same time. When eating a Tadales, it is a treat to find one in your mouth!

Black licorice or sambuca without the sweetness is what is called to mind with this amazing fragrance. A strong candle and one that will certainly attract the attention of your guests.
